TOURISM: VIENNA SIGHTSEEING

Vienna's popularity as a tourist destination owes much of its appeal to the architectural legacy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which it once was the capital. However, it also boasts a thriving contemporary arts and cultural scene, with excellent leisure and social facilities…

The Donauinsel While living in Vienna, a favourite summer activity of ours, was cycling to the wonderful Donauinsel (Danube Island) for a refreshing swim after work. Originally built as a flood prevention scheme for the city, this 200m wide manmade island, stretches over 21km in the middle of the Danube. It's since become a green city oasis attracting walkers, cyclists, skaters, picknickers, swimmers and watersport enthusiasts. Once a year, it also hosts the mega-popular Donaufest, a free music festival which, in 2010, takes place between 25–27 of June. More information here.

Transport – Wienerlinien Vienna's modern public transport system is clean, safe and fairly logical to use. A day pass allows use of the city's trains, trams, buses and underground system making it a cheap way to see popular tourist sights. Check the Winerlinien site for prices, free tourist guide and map.

Number 1 Tram Overwhelmed by the choices but still want to see a lot of sights in a short space of time? A fast way to orientate yourself to the historic inner city is to take the Number 1 tram, which follows a circular route along the Ringstrasse. The tram conveniently takes in many popular tourist destinations such as the Kunsthistorische Museum, The Albertina, the Opera and the Burgtheather.

Mind your Language Although English is widely spoken in the main tourist areas, off the beaten track, it may be rarer. If that bothers you, take a phrase book and amuse the Viennese. Just be aware, when Wieners (the Viennese) choose to be kind to tourists, they'll try to help, even if they haven't a clue how to get to your destination!
