WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT & FACILITIES

The printmaking facilities are based in a residential house in a rural setting with ground floor access to a 25m² print workshop/studio with further space available in a 30m² converted garage, (mainly used for laying grounds, aquatinting, clean up and other processes). All course participants are given a tour of the facilities and instructed in the safe usage of equipment, mordants and materials. Health & Safety

The facilities consist of the following:

Etching Press
– robust, 300 kg heavy, new etching press (2008)
– bed dimensions: 60 x 120 cm (1 cm thick phenolic resin)
– max. printable area: 50 x 100 cm
– print pressure: min. 10 tonnes

Hotplate
– size: 35 x 50 cm
– suitable for plates upto A3 size

Aquatint Box
– currently this is a simple but sturdy cardboard box which works well for aquatint laying on plates upto A3 in size

Etching baths
– our etching baths are suitable for the etching of plates upto A3 size

Mordants
– we are only set up for the use of copper sulphate saline solution (used with zinc plates) or ferric chloride / edinburgh etch (used with copper plates). Please note we cannot accommodate the use of nitric, hydrochloric or sulphuric acids.

Charbonnel Colours
– blacks: F66 (middle black), 55985 (strong black), 55981 (universal black)
– other colours: deep yellow, cardinal red, cobalt blue, turquoise blue, spring green, burnt sienna, Payne's gray, opaque white

Papers
– Somerset Satin White 250 gm (55x76cm) and others available
– cartridge for proofing
